Hi everyone! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Mrs. Kristina McKenna, and I am looking forward to being your teacher for this 2009-2010 school year. Since we will be spending the next 10 months together, I would like to give you some background about me.

I began my teaching career when I graduated from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. My first position was as a preschool teacher. The following year I decided to apply for a position as a kindergarten teacher. I was granted the position and shaped the minds of five year olds for three years. During this time, I pursued my master’s of science degree in Elementary Education from the College of Staten Island. After those three years, I was promoted to second grade!

When I moved to Rhode Island, I worked part-time as a literacy teacher for one year. I was then offered a position as a sixth grade teacher at Blackrock School. For the past 11 years, I have been employed with the Coventry School District. Seven of those years were spent as a fourth grade teacher at Blackrock School.

In addition to being a classroom teacher, I have also been a cooperating teacher for Rhode Island College students and was on several committees during my time at Blackrock School, including the school climate committee, math committee, Teacher Support Team, and mentoring committee. I am currently a member of the Math and PBIS teams at Western Coventry School.

Entering into my seventeenth year in the teaching profession and my third year at Western Coventry Elementary School, I am looking forward to continuing this journey with you. I hope to see you at Parents’ Night on September 21, 2009. During this time I will discuss classroom procedures and expectations.

As a student, I will:

1. Be respectful to my classmates.
2. Put my best effort into all my work.
3. Complete all work neatly and on time.
4. Come prepared to school with homework and materials.
5. Raise my hand before speaking or asking a question.
6. Listen when other people talk.
7. Refrain from using inappropriate language.
8.Use quiet voices in the hallway, bathroom, and in line.
9. Follow all school rules.
10.Walk (not run) in the classroom and hallway.
11. Respect school property.
12. Keep hands, feet, and objects to myself.

As a parent, I will:

1. Remind my child to read for 20 minutes each evening.
2. Monitor my child's schoolwork and homework.

As a teacher, I will:

1. Provide a safe comfortable environment for my students.
2. Provide ample time for my students to complete all assignments.
3. Enforce school rules consistently.
4. Provide students with clear and concise expectations.
5. Work to make learning an enjoyable experience.
6. Do not assign more than 1 hour of homework each evening.

Reading Calendar

You must read 20 minutes each night, five nights a week, for a total of 400 minutes a month.
Write the total spent reading on the calendar for each day.
Complete each monthly Radical Reader sheet, (attached) have a parent sign it and return it to school within the first 4 days of the new month.
